The Vagus Nerve: Your Body’s Communication Highway
The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body, running from the brainstem down
through the neck, chest, and abdomen, connecting to the heart, lungs, and digestive organs. It’s
the primary channel of the parasympathetic nervous system — the “rest and digest” side of your
physiology.
Polyvagal theory’s key insight is that the vagus nerve isn’t a single, uniform pathway. It has two
branches with very different jobs, and understanding them explains a lot about how we respond
to stress.
The Three Autonomic States
- Ventral Vagal — Safety and Connection This is the newest, most evolved branch, unique to
mammals. When it’s active, you feel calm, present, and socially engaged. Your heart rate is
steady, your face is expressive, your voice has natural warmth and variation, digestion works
normally, and sleep comes easily. This is considered the “home base” state — the one your
nervous system is always trying to return to. - Sympathetic — Mobilization This is the fight-or-flight system most people are familiar with.
It activates when the body perceives a challenge or threat, increasing heart rate, redirecting
blood flow to muscles, and sharpening focus. It’s meant to be temporary — useful for a short
burst of action, exhausting if sustained. Chronic stress, deadlines, doom-scrolling, and
unresolved conflict can all keep this system engaged far longer than it was designed for. - Dorsal Vagal — Shutdown This is the oldest branch, shared with reptiles, and it activates
when a threat feels inescapable or overwhelming — or when sympathetic activation has been
sustained too long without resolution. It produces numbness, fatigue, disconnection, brain fog,
and a sense of collapse. It’s a survival state, not a restful one, which is why people can feel
“shut down” and still not sleep well.
Neuroception: The Scanning You Don’t Notice
Porges coined the term neuroception to describe the constant, subconscious process by which
your nervous system scans your environment and internal state for cues of safety or danger —
beneath conscious awareness. A tense conversation, a cluttered space, even certain lighting or
sounds can register as subtle threat cues, keeping you in sympathetic activation without you
ever “deciding” to feel stressed.
This is why willpower alone rarely calms the nervous system. You can’t out-think a state that
was never reached through thinking in the first place.
Why This Matters Day to Day
Understanding your state — rather than judging it — changes how you respond to it:
- Feeling anxious or on edge? You’re likely in sympathetic activation. The move is to
discharge the energy (movement, shaking, vigorous breath) before trying to calm down. - Feeling foggy, numb, or unmotivated? You may be in dorsal shutdown. The move is
gentle re-engagement — small movements, warmth, orienting to your surroundings —
not forcing calm or productivity. - Feeling steady and connected? That’s ventral vagal. Notice what got you there; it’s
worth repeating.
Moving Toward Ventral Vagal, Intentionally
Because breath is one of the only autonomic functions you can consciously direct, breathwork is
one of the most reliable tools for shifting states — particularly for moving out of sympathetic
activation and into ventral vagal safety. Long, slow exhales, humming, and paced breathing all
directly stimulate the vagus nerve.
Polyvagal theory doesn’t just explain why you feel the way you do. It offers a way back — a
reminder that your nervous system isn’t broken when it reacts, and that safety is a state your
body can be guided back toward, breath by breath.
